I have Knology basic/basic cable and an HD Tivo (QAM tuner), but when I do a channel scan I dont find anything other than the analog stations. Is knology only delivering analog to those of us who do not have one of their fancy packages? I tried switching over to Charter but they will not hook me up since I also have satellite TV. Is that even legal?

I don't think its possible to do with the HD tivo without the cable cards. Without those I don't belive it will tune the HD channels. When I first got charter i couldn't get the in the clear channels until i got a cable card. When I got those installed, prior to all the other HD channels becoming available (the cards being activated), the locals came in fine.
The thing with charter, how do they even know you also have satellite? That shouldn't matter to them one way or the other. Unless you are using pre-existing wires in your home for the satellite and they would also plan to use those rather than run their own.

Charter said something about satellite when I was trying to place the order, but yes, you are right, the cable lines are completely separate from the Directv lines. I guess I could try to order again and see what happens but the whole cable thing has given me a bad taste. I think I will just try and make my OTA more reliable so that I can completely dump cable. Now that I can stream NetFlix and everything on Hulu directly to my televisions there is not much that I would miss if my OTA goes wacky on me.

You could always "move" your DirecTV service and use the AM21 to have "backup" locals.

Yeah I wish I could "move" my DTV but I dont have an address to move it to. Would love to get the metro DC area locals. As it turns out I went online and chatted with someone at Charter this evening, someone who actually knew what they were doing. So, no, having satellite is not an issue. It is only costing me a couple dollars more a month to have their basic/basic cable plus cablecards for my two HD Tivos. It is even less than I was originally quoted, $23.99 per month. I know that Charter has plenty of issues but as long as I get my HD locals I dont care. I am still trying to get someone to put up a rooftop antenna for me but this is a good stopgap.

supermale, have you actually done this? I'm not that familiar with how it works but I know of someone that has done it with dish. However an actual dish installer did it for him. I told a friend at work to try it with directv so he did, but after they changed his address they asked him what time would be good to meet the installer at the new address. When he told them nobody would be there they ended up not going through with it.

I think the only way I have heard of this working is if you are doing the opposite, ie moving from a place with DTV locals to one where there aren't any. Move your own dish and then dont give them the new installation address. You can change your mailing address or just do everything online so its not a big deal.

I have done it. I called DirecTV and told them that I had moved my service (for work), and had a dish installed by my "landlord." I told them everything was already set up, and I just needed the service changed. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I did it on a Monday, telling them that I had moved over the weekend. The CSR told me that I wouldn't be getting HD locals at my location (which was incorrect), I said "Fine," and it was done. I'm getting Atlanta networks, with Columbus stations OTA.

Please clarify - you told DTV that you had relocated and what - that the landlord installed a new dish, or that one was already there?

I told them that the landlord had the equipment, and installed my dish for me. Therefore, everything was all set up, and I just needed to change the service.
BTW, I don't pretend to know the radius of the spot beams, but I think D.C. would be pushing it.

Yeah that's what I thought, that you should say that you were doing a self install. Then there should be no reason for them to send a tech. So another question, what happens if you did actually need a tech to come out? Would you have to change your address again?

I've often wondered about that, and luckily it hasn't happened. When they installed my Slimline dish here, they did a very solid job. I've ordered equipment from the DirecTV website and had it shipped to my actual address (my billing address, to them) with no problem, and no hint of the need for a service call.
The times that I have had to have a tech come out (like when I had my service installed originally), I got a call from the local office to confirm the time of the install. I'd just tell them that I'd call back to reschedule. If it ever comes down that I NEED a tech visit, I have talked to a tech here in town, so I'd probably just call them directly, and eat a charge if I have to. I'm not above slipping a tech some cash if necessary.
