heylo,
my parents do NOT have charter's cable box connected to their HDTV.
an automated scan of channels reveals a good number of channels, but they are weirdly numbered. for instance, NBC is 18-1. but there isn't another channel until 39-2 or something. i'm not sure they are receiving all of the channels they would receive if they had charter's box.
is there a listing of what channels are available in digital for free using the TV's built in tuner? CADTV.
thanx! hope that makes sense... s.d.

You should be able to get all local HD channels via cable without a box. They are required to be offered "in the clear" meaning the cable company cannot scramble them and require a box to get them. As for others that may be available, i'm not sure. And usually when you get them this way they are on strange numbers. For awhile my brother was getting all the locals on knology on 0-1, etc.

Rerun the scan. If the HDTV was connected to Charter it will still have the old channels as assigned by Charter in memory. I had the exact same problem and followed the on-screen prompts and the HDTV's digital tuner corrected the problem. Be sure to manually add Channel 4 if you use for example like me a standard satellite receiver from Dish Network or DirecTV. If you have only the one device or ports for one device on back of the HDTV you may be forced to use the HDTV's AV ports and the antenna for the receivers or you'll find yourself manually switching wires.

One clarification....I put my DVD/VCR on AV; my Dish DVR 625 on antenna (Channel 4). Since my 625 is a standard DVR receiver it does not have component or HDMI but it does have S-Video port (woo hoo!) which will override the video output of my DVD/VCR player. My wife has something to say about me having the really cool toys!
