I noticed sometime ago that WTVM isn't as clear on non HD programming as it should be. One night a program ran over it's 60 minute time slot and it appeared as if someone "flipped" thier HD switch and what I had been watching got much clearer. Two minutes later, the HD show came on.
I wonder why they don't leave it that way full time...somedays my cable is just as good, and it shouldn't be that way with digital OTA.

I've noticed that too on WRBL. Haven't seen it on WTVM but I don't watch much on ABC. I think it's them passing the upconverted standard signal rather than the real network digital feed. If they are manually switching I would guess that's "easier" for them than worrying about switching in the local commercials and such. So they just pass the analog stuff to digital the whole time since there's no HD to worry about. But i think all the stations have automatic switching now on non-live events, so you wouldnt' think that'd be an issue.

I think that with WTVM, they only switch to the HD feed from the network when they know there is actually an HD signal airing. All other times, including local commercial breaks, they up convert their analog feed, which is routed through multiple places which degrades the signal. They have recently moved a frame sync into another point in the HD stream to try to help with the digital break up when switching between true HD and upconverted signals. If someone watches ABC on a regular basis, can you watch during the transitions to see if they are cleaner?
