This weekend WTVM was using full stretch mode for their 4:3 material so that it filled the whole 16:9 frame and it made the image terribly distorted. Before they, and WXTX, had been using what they call 14:9 which almost filled the screen but was not distorted as much. What do you prefer?
Personally I like it to be 4:3 as it should be like on WLTZ and WRBL.

I agree with Mike. Non HD should just be 4:3 and leave true HD in 16:9, and I have already mentioned that to them. They have been having problems with their upconverter lately, and as of last week they were still waiting on a replacement. I think the 16:9 thing is just them experimenting, with the regular viewers unfortunate victims.

I prefer the 14:9 then 16:9 then 4:3
My reasoning, prolonged viewing of television with black bars at the top/bottom or sides of the screen on a RPTV (like mine) can eventually lead to uneven dimming of the lighting or even screen burn in extreme situations. (according to my tv's manual) And I have seen screen burn on an RPTV first hand..... it was not pretty.

I also agree with 4:3, the images are much clearer on larger screens. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to open a thread on this subject. I found a link on the avs forum where many ABC affiliates also use the 14:9 format, and as usual, most hate it. Let's get this voting going and forward the results to WTVM. Good luck!

Well, I don't know what exactly made them do it, but WTVM and WXTX are broadcasting upconverted material in 4:3 as of yesterday. I don't know about everyone else, but the picture looks alot better that way on my TV!

I sent them an email that week they were doing full stretch to say i preferred 4:3. I'm glad they switched. I think it looks better too. I'm interested to see if the college football games look any better. They've always looked pretty bad to me. Looked really blurry. I also sent an email to give the a thumbs up for the switch.

Yesterday morning, the Saturday broadcast for Good Morning America was in HD and according to them, will remain in this format. Hopefully the weekday show will also be in HD.
I also noticed that everything else that day in non HD was in 4:3 format on WTVM. Today, (Sunday), all non HD programs remain in 4:3 format.
So far so good...keep this up WTVM!
