Greetings ....
Just observations here - feel free to offer comments.
Today, Saturday Feb 14th 2009, WRBL TV-3 (DT-15) presented a regional basketball game televised by Raycom Sports on its primary (HD) digital channel - also the analog channel. On its second digital channel - the "RA" channel where Weather usually airs - WRBL presented CBS' coverage of the 3rd round of the AT&T Pebble Pro-Am Golf Tournament.
When the basketball ended, I thought that WRBL would switch the golf over to the HD/analog channel and resume the WeatherCast on the RA channel. Instead, golf stayed on the RA channel through its conclusion on CBS, while infomerical programs aired on the HD/analog channel.
WRBL's digital HD channel is available for free on Phenix City cable (Cable TV of East Alabama), but it seems that the RA channel is not. Rather, the RA channel appears to be part of the digital subscription package.
End of my observations!
Thanx-A-Lot, Franko-Video-09

I never noticed that, and while it would have been desirable to switch the golf to the HD channel once the regional game was over, I'm happy to see a local station using their subchannel that way. I've often thought that would be a great use of the channels during "breaking news" and severe weather situations. When I lived in the Birmingham market, when severe weather events would occur during a major event, like a game, they would split the picture, and move the sport audio to the SAP channel. Being able to use the digital sub to continue the network broadcast would be so much better.
As for access to the subs on digital cable, I can't comment, as I only get the channels OTA.
