I noticed today that stations are changing things around a bit. WLTZ moved to 38.1 instead of 38.2. WRBL looks like it's about to put radar or weather info in 3.2 and I hear WTVM is about to put up something on 9.2 maybe. I wonder if WLTZ would consider putting WBG on a channel since it comes out of the same building for the cable companies. There are many possibilites ahead....

From what i've read multicasting degrades the quality of the HD broadcasts. I guess I'll wait to see if I notice a difference. But if it makes the HD look bad my vote is against multicasting.

From what i've read multicasting degrades the quality of the HD broadcasts. I guess I'll wait to see if I notice a difference. But if it makes the HD look bad my vote is against multicasting. A lot of it depends on the resolution that the station is putting out. 720p stations like ABC and FOX show less degradation of PQ than 1080i stations like CBS and NBC. For instance, I've picked up WSB-DT out of Atlanta (that multicasts a channel) and found that their PQ was similar to WTVM's PQ. I also receive ABC-HD East & West from DirecTV, and both of them multicast (OTA), with very little difference in PQ compared to WTVM's signal. However, my local NBC affiliate (WALB-DT) offers three channels on their DT channel. One being the High-Definition channel, the second being a digital copy of their SD feed, and the third being a 24 hour "Super Doppler Ten" radar feed. While I could tell it was not as sharp as other 1080i feeds that I have seen (CBS-HD East & West on DirecTV, and WCTV-DT out of Thomasville), I couldn't compare it to anything (I've never been able to pick up WLTZ-DT) until recently when I was able to pick up a NBC station out of Tampa (or Orlando, I don't remember) and compared it to WALB-DT and found that "The Tonight Show" PQ on the Florida NBC affiliate (that was not multicasting) was MUCH more sharper and 3D in appearance compared to WALB-DT's HD signal of Jay Leno. So, I'm disappointed with WTVM's choice, if that's true, and REALLY disappointed with WRBL's choice if that's true. BTW, Mike, have you heard anything about whether or not WTVM ever intends to upgrade to DD5.1?! I'm getting spoiled on ABC-HD East and ABC-HD West?! ~Alan

BTW, Mike, have you heard anything about whether or not WTVM ever intends to upgrade to DD5.1?! Last time I checked they said they planned to but wasn't sure when they would. I'll check up on that.

Here's what I got about DD5.1 from WTVM:
"No plans at this time for 5.1.
ABC will be upgrading their program delivery system later this year to an all digital system ( the current system is combination analog and digital and the analog portion dates back to the mid 1980's). I'm sure we will look at what is provided to us at that point and review the 5.1 situation. "
