In a thread started last october it was stated that columbus stations would soon be on directv, with montgomery, al soon added. Has this happened yet and if not is it expected in the near future.

It hasn't happened and I would not count on it happening anytime soon

I was afraid of that. I've recently installed an antenna and get good reception in Auburn, but I have a question. Is the reason that some of the programming is in 4:3 format because it is not HD? On each of the channels I receive the .2 reception (which is weather) is in 16:9, but much of the time the .1 reception is in 4:3/,

Yes. If it's 4:3 it's most likely not HD. There are some exceptions but for the most part that is true. Not everything is HD. On locals it will be most of your primetime programming (8-11) and most Live sporting events. Basically anything, other than sports, before 8pm will be SD upconvert.
This of course changes when you start talking about cable/satellite HD channels. Those vary quite a bit. There are a few channels that now have an HD version but all they really do is show whatever is on their SD channel and they stretch it to fill the 16:9 window. An example of this would be A&E HD or History HD. I find very little of their programming to be actual HD. TNT also does this but I think now they are getting more HD programming. Probably still 50/50 at best.
