Is there anyone locally who I can 'hire' to show me how to set up a directv dish to pick-up channels? I have had no luck going over it on the phone with them (the meter registers that it sees the satellite but the receiver says 0)....

If it's an analog meter, then it will show every Ku band satellite up there. Which dish are you trying to set up?

That's definitely why you're having problems, you've got three ku band satellite LNBs feeding signal into your analog meter at the same time, so there's no way of knowing which satellite you're actually aiming at. It's a nightmare if you don't know how to use an analog meter with a KA/KU 5 dish.
Where do you live? And do you currently subscribe to DirecTV?

I am a current subscriber. I live near the airport in Columbus - behind Gold's gym in Biltmore Forest.

Oh wow, you're pretty darned close to me then. I'm behind the Sonic on Manchester Xway.
Sounds like you're upgrading your system to HD or for locals? What kind of receivers do you have?

In my house I have a couple of HD receivers and several standard receivers. The house works fine. This dish is separate (like for tailgating). I have taken it, a standard receiver and a tv in to the backyard trying to learn how to align the dish for when I take it on the road but have had no luck so far. Any chance I can work a deal with you for you to come by and show me how to do this? If so, send me an email....

I assume you're wanting to use an HD receiver when you're on the road? Yeah, those dishes are a pain. It's possible your dish settings aren't set properly.
Is the pole you're using perfectly plumb? Is the tilt of the dish set to 67, and the elevation 49? With a plumb mast and correct dish settings, it's possible to aim AU9 with an analog meter.
Let me know if you're still having trouble and I'll email ya.

Actually, I am just trying to use the standard receiver. I figure if I can't get that to work then I have no chance at ever getting the HD stuff to work. I have a tripod and check the level that came with it to make sure it is level. I think I have it pointing to around 211 on the compass with an elevation of 49. I have tried tilt settings of 66 and 90 so far (some guy told me that tilt can be 90 if I am just trying to get the 101 satellite). So far I can't anything above 0 on the signal meter screen on the receiver....

What kind of 5 LNB is it? Does it have one or four outputs. And what kind of LNB do you have on the dish for your house? I'm wondering if the receiver you're using is set to SWM and the LNB is a legacy four-output.
The earliest I can give you a hand is Sunday. Let me know and I'll email you my phone number.

It does have the 4 outputs. When working with Directv over the phone they had me change the settings on the receiver to 18 " round for the dish and multi-switch on the switch type. Sunday would be fine with me if you can find some time.
