Where do we look for the channels? Ie where abouts would they be in the guide? Should all of them become available tomorrow: #3 - WRBL (CBS) - HD only #9 - WTVM (ABC) - HD only #28 - WJSP (PBS) - HD only #38 - WLTZ (NBC) - HD only #39 - WLTZDT2 (The CW) - SD only #54 - WXTX (FOX) - HD only If you have the proper equipment (HD), the channels should show up in the guide tomorrow morning (6:00 A.M. EDT or slightly earlier), but they will be grayed out in the GUIDE until you call in and activate them. ~Alan

And the Directv pain begins.
I am a new customer from August and have the free everything if I pay for Sunday Ticket special promo. So they can not add the locals for 24-48 hours.....oh and I can not add new HD boxes at the promo price until after that. (I have 2 HD DVR and 3 SD) Hello lack of planning by Directv! You think maybe someone should of thought of this before launch day.

Activated and upgraded boxes are ordered (arriving in 3-5 days) - took a while to get my 2nd upgraded box for $49 instead of $69... (hey, 20 bucks is 20 bucks) if you get the same, walk them through the web site to get to the press release:
at the bottom of the home page...Our Company>Press Releases> go to Page 2 of the press releases
about 1/2 way down the page you will see the release titled "DirecTV to offer Local Channels in 172 markets..."
For some reason they could not use the direct link that I provided to find the article.
If you have DNS for any networks, they "should be automatically removed" but I had them do it manually to insure that the charges were removed correctly.

Trust me, I got my locals in August, and it was a PAIN trying to get everything set up like I wanted it... and two of the channels had major issues for weeks, and CBS wasn't added for over a month because of technical difficulties. ~Alan

Depending upon when one got the DNS feeds, they may be "Grandfathered." That's the situation with me. I did have PBS DNS removed automatically, but I wasn't "Grandfathered" in for it, and I didn't even have to submit a waiver for it, so I suspect it was a deal that DirecTV worked out with GPB until locals were available. Bottom line, other than PBS (which really didn't bother me since I now get the local one in HD), I'm not giving up my DNS... especially now that DirecTV turned on the West Coast HD feeds for those with the East Coast feeds... ~Alan

But they insist on sending a tech to "install" them. I got the first free and two additional for $49+tax each. I already have SWM and 2 HD DVR so the "install" is stupid. They are coming Friday though so it is a quick turn around. Now it has been 12 hours since I called and still no locals. They said it could take up to 48 hrs since the promo dept has to add it. I guess no World Series tonight. When the install guy comes do I get to keep the old SD boxes? I was told or read somewhere we buy the equipment so I want to keep the old boxes and not give free stuff back to DirecTV. Am I correct?

I called a third time and got a better answer. This time they added the locals ($6/mo) and then issued a credit for the 5 months ($30 total) to cover the difference so my promo w/ free premier for 5 months didn't get changed. So as long as the billing system was filled in correctly it should be smooth sailing until my 5 month promo ends in February.

Sadly this is going to be the norm as far as existing customers wanting to get their equipment upgraded for local reception.
It's all about getting a KNOWLEDGEABLE customer representative, which is hard when it comes to dealing with such a small number of customers who've never had locals before and must now have MPEG4 equipment to do so.
Question... those of you with Columbus locals now, is channel 28 PBS coming in for you? Mine still says Extension 721.

If have only been a DirecTV customer since August, the odds are 99.9% that you have LEASED boxes, and DirecTV will take them back. For a simple receiver install, it sometimes sucks that installers are neccessary for those of who know what we're doing, but I know quite a few people who allow me to be aware of it being a good policy. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did... www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=182538~Alan
