Sigh...
Sadly, the DirecTV website now has Columbus locals listed for October. More patience needed on my part, I guess.

Damn. This sucks for customers getting DirecTV in anticipation of NFL football on the locals.

There is one possible, yet VERY GOOD reason for the delay. Equipment shortage. DirecTV is in etreme, and I mean very extreme short supply of HD equipment with no end in sight. Jobs are having to be rescheduled due to the shortage. This problem is nationwide, not just locally.
Once Columbus locals are launched, EVERY SINGLE receiver installed on new installs and upgrades will be an HD receiver. If locals were launched on the 21st as planned, it's highly unlikely we could install that many jobs.

Most likely true. I called to see about upgrading my two "old" SD receivers and could get no deals from anyone I talked to and one of the reps finally mentioned that the HD receivers were in short supply right now and that would likely mean no deals in the immediate future on upgrades - they actually recommended that I check on e-bay. Gotta use them to fill those new orders...which is a good thing for all of us.

So after the shortage what will DirecTV charge to change a reciver to HD to get the locals. I had 5 rooms installed on August 14th. Two HD boxes and three SD boxes. So I am reading here that the three rooms with SD boxes will not get the locals....what will they charge me get HD boxes even though I dont care about HD in those rooms but want locals. I may just cancel the three other rooms then and save the $15 from those additional receivers. What a crock......

Based on my conversations last week, I think it is $199 for HD-DVR and $99 for HD - no rebate or credit for the SD receivers.

www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/article.jsp?assetId=P6820019 "With the launch of locals in these markets, DIRECTV is rolling out a special offer for customers who need to upgrade their equipment: The first receiver is free and all additional receivers are only $49, along with free standard professional installation. To upgrade, customers should call 1-800-DIRECTV no earlier than three weeks before their market's confirmed launch date."Hopefully they honor this and at least I will get one of the three rooms free receiver and the other two would be only $49 ea instead of $99 ea.

The problem with that press release is that there is NO confirmed launch date. I just hope the equipment shortage improves before October, or there could be another delay.
AND... on top of that, DirecTV's ordering system will not allow these upgrades specifically for locals UNTIL the local channels are actually launched. So that press release has a lot of fluff.

How about us people who already have the HD equipment? Doesn't seem fair that we should have to wait too. Especially when we've already waited for two years.

Anything is possible. I heard reports from a co-worker that he saw DISH customers with Columbus locals turned on a couple of weeks leading up to the June launch date. They already had an Eastern Arc install, so it was just a flip of a switch on DISH's end.
It is possible DirecTV could do a soft launch before October, but that's highly unlikely. They didn't do it in Albany, so I don't see it happening here. It would be nice if they'd allow employees to test local channel reception before an official launch, but they don't do that unfortunately.
For those of us with HD equipment, it's just a simple phone call to DirecTV to flip a switch on their end. But we have to wait until the day of the launch. As soon as I get updated information I'll post it here.

What is your source regarding the Oct 27 as the expected launch date? Frankly, I'm tired of this delay after delay. In Oct, Direct tv will probably announce Nov as the new launch date. Dish is looking more and more promising.

Internal company announcement. This date is tentative, could be earlier or later, nothing is promised. And there's only been one delay. All I can say is keep watching DirecTV's website directv.com/hdlocals, which is where you'll know the day locals are launched.
No one in the company is happy with the delay. As employees we want them just as bad as our customers.

Makes a person curious as to why...I have HD equipment now, that I understand will accommodate locals, as I would assume lots of people in the area do, so the lack of hardware for rolling out seems a less than viable reason. A couple of the local channels have responded to email that they are "waiting for DirecTV" to roll out their stations. We've not had any new HD roll out in a while have we? Locals or Nationals...

???I agree. Many of us already have HD capability so it doesn't make much since of delaying local channels on that basis.
