DirecTV will be launching local channels for Columbus on Wednesday, October 27th. The local channels will use DirecTV's KA satellites at either 99°w or 103°w. A MPEG4 (HD) receiver will be required to receive them. If you currently receive HD channels from DirecTV, no new equipment is neccessary unless you have older SD receivers you want to swap out. Channels currently available are:
WRBL (HD), WTVM (HD), WJSP (HD), WLTZ (HD), WTLZ-DT2 (SD), WXTX (HD) WLGA data is currently uplinked, but since they are not currently broadcasting, don't expect anything.. Channels should be made available to subscribers in the following Alabama counties: Barbour, Chambers, Lee, and Russell. Channels should be made available to subscribers in the following Georgia counties: Chattahoochee, Clay, Harris, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster.

If I have a new DirecTV installation done in August will I need to re-aim the dish or re-do any settings to get the local in September?

If you intend on getting HD service with your installation, then no, you will be all set up. The only changes you might have to make is to add the locals to your Favorites if you use a Favorites list, and of course possibly switching your Series Links to the satellite delivered locals instead of from the OTA signals if you intend on getting a DVR and an off-air tuner device (AM21). ~Alan

I would get 2 HD DVR and probably not get an antenna install since it would only be a short while without locals. I am moving to a new house and be doing a complete new install.

With 2 HD-DVRs, you would get the correct dish, and the only steps you might need to take would be to possibly call DirecTV on the morning of launch to add the locals to your package, or to add them to your Favorites should you use a Favorites list. ~Alan

So, since our friends on the "other" satellite system do not get the CW in their local package, can we assume that we won't get that one in ours either?
I see nothing on the channel's website about either system carrying them on sat...

Because the CW is a sub-channel of channel 38, it is unlikely we will ever see it on our satellite locals lineup. DirecTV doesn't carry sub-channels anywhere that I'm aware of.
You're better off applying for a waiver for the CW. Channel 38 is the only local channel that's approved just about every waiver for NBC, so there's a good chance the CW would be easy to get a waiver approved.

OK - Applied for, so we'll see if they come through. Not that it is a huge deal, there are only 2-3 shows that anyone in the family watches, but convenience is everything.
Update - well, that was quick - less than 24 hours, the waiver for CW was approved.

DirecTV does indeed carry sub-channels from multiple markets, though it often depends on what type of programming is available on those sub-channels. If it's network programming like The CW, it is often carried. Some PBS sub-channels are carried, and some MyNetwork TV sub-channels. If it's weather radar like WTVM-DT2 or RetroTV like WRBL-DT2, it is not. Some local markets with sub-channels carried by DirecTV: Albany, GA: WSWG-DT2 (MyNetworkTV) - COMING SOON!Dothan, AL: WTVY-DT2 (MyNetworkTV) & WTVY-DT3 (The CW) I'd say the odds of Columbus, GA getting WTLZ-DT2 via DirecTV are VERY GOOD. You might want to hang onto the DNS should DirecTV add HD-DNS for The CW... though there's a possibility you may lose it next year or the next. ~Alan

Last official word from corporate, which was just recently, is September 21st. Don't hold your breath, though, anything could change pushing that date further back.

We shall see. Last word to our office was 9/21.
I've got each and every one of my locals via outdoor OTA w/ AM21's, so it won't affect my television enjoyment the slightest. And I'll be keeping the OTA active even after the locals are launched... Remember, rain fade sucks if you're trying to watch your local news for weather reports during severe weather!

And I'll be keeping the OTA active even after the locals are launched... Remember, rain fade sucks if you're trying to watch your local news for weather reports during severe weather! As I've stated previously, an installer I talked to last month said that his office wasn't even aware that Albany, GA LIL was launching until they went in that morning and was told they were launched. When I contacted DirecTV by phone about it, I was told they were launching in September. The reason I was aware they were launching on August 4th is due to the person I quoted above who told me plainly that his information said they were launching on the 4th. That being said, DirecTV recently stated on Twitter that it would be the first half of the month, so the person I quoted above could have heard somebody say they had been delayed, referring to the new 9/21 date. So it's very possible that 9/21 is indeed the launch date. ~Alan

When it was first confirmed (internally) several months ago that Albany, Columbus, and Montgomery were getting launched all that we heard was September 29th. Then the press release came out stating these three markets were slated for 3rd quarter. Then DirecTV's hdlocals page narrowed down even further by market and month, but it had Montgomery pushed to October, which is 4th quarter.
As a DirecTV tech, Columbus can't get launched soon enough. We're getting asked everyday by new and existing customers "What day are the locals coming?" It'll be a glorious day when they are turned on.
